A quick refresher on sizes and colors! There are two sizes, one is 1” (actually ¾”- 1 ¾”) and the other is 1.5” (1½ ”-2”). There are two main colors, Blue-blue (different shades of blues) and Mixed-color (different shades of blue with a range of green shades, rust, browns, lilac, and hints of old gold).
What thickness to choose?
The 1” stone is most used on mortar set, and the 1.5” is used for dry settings. Although Bluestone flagstone for these applications is available in all irregular shapes, the most popular is the cut pattern which come in standard sizes with 6” increments. All of the cut pattern sizes are ½” smaller to allow it to be put down with mortar joint.

What shapes does it come in?
Bluestone mainly come in cut pattern (flooring), irregular, tumbled (for walls), and custom cut (mantels, counters, hearths, etc). The most sought after is cut pattern, which come in standard sizes and increments of 6 inches. Irregular flagstone are pieces that are chipped/ broken at the quarries to create irregular shapes. Tumbled Bluestone is stone that has been tumbled to create a rustic look, making each piece smoother with round edges.
What textures are available?
There is one texture called natural cleft, which is Bluestone that has been hand split to achieve a natural look, including an imperfect surface. Another texture is flame treated Bluestone also known as thermal finish. Thermal finished Bluestone is stone which is flamed for a smoother finish.
What thicknesses are there? Mortar set application or dry setting?
We carry the 1” and 1.5” thicknesses. Since it is a natural stone, the 1” actually varies from ¾”- 1 ¾”, and the 1.5” varies from 1.5”-2” thick. The 1” Bluestone is typically used for mortar set applications, and the 1.5” Bluestone is used for dry settings.
